Pediatric dental care is essential to your child’s overall health and development. At 7Dental, we understand that parents want the best for their children including a healthy, confident smile. Establishing good dental habits early helps set the foundation for lifelong oral health.
From baby teeth to braces, this guide will walk you through pediatric dental care tips for every age and stage.
Infant to Toddler (0–3 Years): The First Tooth and First Visit
Key milestones:
First tooth usually appears between 6–10 months.
Schedule your child’s first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth.
Tips for parents:
Gently wipe your baby’s gums with a damp cloth after feedings.
Once teeth erupt, brush twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle to prevent baby bottle tooth decay.
Did you know? Cavities can form as soon as your child’s first tooth comes in!
Preschool to Early Elementary (3–6 Years): Building Healthy Habits
As your child’s baby teeth finish coming in (20 in total), it’s the perfect time to teach independence and routine.
Oral health tips:
Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste from age 3 onward.
Supervise brushing and flossing to ensure proper technique.
Make oral care fun using songs, brushing apps, or colourful toothbrushes.
Limit sugary snacks, juices, and sticky treats to reduce the risk of cavities.
School-Age Children (6–12 Years): Big Changes, Bigger Smiles
This is when baby teeth fall out and adult teeth start to emerge especially the first molars and incisors.
Key dental care practices:
Continue brushing twice daily and flossing once daily.
Ask your dentist about dental sealants to protect molars.
Visit the dentist every 6 months to monitor growth and alignment.
Encourage water over juice, and provide tooth-friendly snacks like cheese, yogurt, and crunchy fruits and veggies.
Teens (13+ Years): Independence & Oral Health Responsibility
As teens gain independence, keeping up with oral hygiene becomes more important than ever.
What to watch for:
Consult your dentist about braces, Invisalign®, or other orthodontic options.
Reinforce good brushing and flossing habits especially with braces.
Educate teens on the effects of smoking, vaping, and sugary drinks.
Provide a portable dental care kit for school or sports.
Why Are Regular Dental Visits So Important?
Routine dental checkups allow us to:
Catch issues early before they become painful or costly.
Track tooth and jaw development during growth spurts.
Reinforce healthy habits in a positive, stress-free setting.
